Our Weekly Report

open house

As I said in yesterday's post, we've been enjoying the fall weather, and Kathryn's new penchant for outdoor play has taught me a few things this week. I never ceased to be amazed at how much being a parent teaches me. Though we did not succeed in doing an "official" nature study lesson this week, Kathryn got plenty of outside time, and an up close and personal lesson on leaves. {grin}

We've done a page of math each day, which equates to half of a lesson. One day this week, we did a whole lesson. Kathryn doesn't like those big triple-digit subtraction problems, so if we have those in our lesson, I have to abbreviate a few other things to keep us both sane. She's getting better with her multiplication tables, though, so that hasn't been as painful this week. I'm trying to get the point across that even if you don't like doing something (because it is hard), you need to practice so it will get easier. We're getting there.

Our character trait this week is compassionate, and our memory verse this week is 1 Peter 3:8: "Finally, I want all of you to live together in peace. Try to understand each other. Love each other like brothers. Be kind and humble."

Tea time is something we try to do each week. Usually we'll read poetry to each other at that time. This week we had another mom & daughter join us. Kathryn and Isabella enjoyed tea, snacks, and playing outside in the leaves. My blog-friend-turned-real-life-friend Mari and I enjoyed conversation and the YUMMY scones and tea she brought. (On my sidebar is a link to her site, Tea & Traditions. Good stuff!)

In handwriting, Kathryn has begun the transition to cursive italic. I think she would tell you this has been the most exciting thing for her this week! She is having a grand time making pretty letters, and can't wait til she has to write thank you notes so everyone can be amazed at her beautiful handwriting. I like it better than traditional cursive, too, and may just have to learn it myself.

The kids in drama class put on a mini puppet show yesterday. They each had to come up with names for their puppets, as well as what planet they were from, and a problem the puppets needed to solve. Each child did a one-minute puppet show, and the puppet on one hand had to help the puppet on the other hand solve their little dilemma. This was our last official class for this session, but after Thanksgiving we'll be start up again with rehearsals for "The Wizard of Oz".

In our readings, Kathryn and I were both disappointed to say goodbye to Understood Betsy, but she's enjoying The Wind in the Willows. Her favorite of our history readings is Story of the World (we're doing Volume II this year). I may rethink some of the others for third grade, but I haven't done enough research to make decisions about that yet. In her God's World News ~ Taking Off magazine, Unit 1 was about Salt: it's uses, where it comes from, a bit of history about it, and why the Bible tells us to be like salt. Also in the magazine was a time-line with information about the pilgrims; good timing with Thanksgiving just around the corner.
