“Dear Lord, I do not ask that Thou shouldst give me some high work of thine, some noble calling or some wondrous task. Give me a little hand to hold in mine.” ~ AnonymousProverbs 17:6 says, "Children's children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children." God, the Father of all creation, reminds many times in the Bible that parents are to be honored. Even from the cross, Jesus thought of his mother's well-being, and asked the disciple John to care for her as if she were John's own mother (John 19:26-27). If Jesus honored his mother this way, what does that say of the great worth of parents? Devoting twenty-one verses to describing the "Wife of Noble Character" also speaks to the high calling of motherhood; this Proverbs 31 woman is worth more than rubies, and her children will call her blessed. That's certainly nothing to take lightly!
The Bible is clear that we are responsible for our children's education. This applies even if we don't choose to homeschool. We're told in Deuteronomy 6:7, "Repeat them [God's teachings] to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." And Paul reminds us that Timothy became a believer because he was taught from childhood by his mother and grandmother (Acts 16:1, 2 Timothy 1:5 & 3:15). Discipling our children is an awesome responsibility!
I cherish the little hand in mine, but I believe having a child is indeed the most noble of callings, and certainly a wondrous task. I can think of no other higher work the Lord could give me than being responsible for the care and teaching of a child.
