Though we almost never miss a Sunday at church, we decided to worship at home this Easter Sunday. My mom joined us for pancakes, turkey-bacon, and coffee. Ken got creative with the resurrection theme: he made pancakes shaped like the hill of Golgotha, a cross, the tomb (with a small round one for the stone rolled away), a crown of thorns, and more. The palm branch and donkey didn't quite come out recognizable, though. {hee hee}
We have never done the Easter Bunny, but we do give Kathryn an Easter basket--and try to find other things to put in it than just a bunch of candy. This year it included little Lindt chocolate lambs, a small Reece's Bunny, some puppy notecards & a journal, packets of sunflower & carrot seeds, and some stickers. It was a bright and sunny day, which was a wonderful change after a stormy, tornado-filled Good Friday! (My irises are blooming like crazy, and our dogwoods didn't seem to be harmed by last week's freezing weather--hurray!)
Later that morning, we listened to Word of Promise - Easter Story (an audio recording); it was long, so we listened to half of the CD before lunch, then Brandon came over for a while. Kathryn was excited to dye Easter eggs for the first time, and we talked about how the dye covering the eggs is like Jesus' blood covering our sins. (We were not able to eat them later, though, because in my quest to not OVERcook the boiled eggs like I tend to do, they ended up as very soft boiled eggs. Yuck!)
Brandon left to go have dinner with his girlfriend and her family, and we listened to the rest of our audio recording. As it went through the story, Kathryn opened the corresponding Resurrection Egg. Afterwards, we listened to a few hymns. In the evening, we went to my uncle George's house for a very casual family get-together. My aunt Beckie gave Kathryn an Easter basket with lots of fun things, including a ladybug kite. It was just windy enough for her to really get it flying!
The Easter basket from Beckie also included bubbles. Her cousin Cullen went jumping and chasing the bubbles trying to eat them! Silliness runs in the family!
Blowing bubbles inspired Kathryn to write a blog post about bubbles yesterday: pretty profound for an 8-year-old, I think! She loves having new visitors, so please stop by & leave her a comment if you have a chance.
